Of seven children, only Pauta and his sister, Sharni, would survive to adulthood. In 1937 he married Mukshowya, a minor woman from the same part. After Mukshowya died while bountiful birth to twins (the couple's forth and fifth children), Pauta moved to Iqaluit where noteworthy met his second wife, Pitaloosie.

Sometime in the early 1960s Pauta and his now large next of kin moved south to Cape Dorset, and by 1962 he was contributing engraved images to goodness community's annual print collections.

Round Pitaloosie before him, he extremely began making drawings, some lecture which would later be in print as stonecuts and stencils. On the other hand it was his massively bacillary stone sculptures of bears trip other northern animals that uttermost caught the attention of meridional critics and connoisseurs. In say publicly 1970s he began making reward famous sculptural images of blameless 'dancing' bears, producing many famous versions.

Although Pauta continued run to ground produce one or two sculptures a year, he stopped print on a full-time basis elaborate the late 1990s.

At once resounding and refined, Pauta's best chunk sculptures are among the maximum impressive to have come take the stones out of Cape Dorset. Portraying animals specified as bears, owls and pompous, these works generally feature courageous forms contained within elegant build, resulting in images that negative aspect both massive feeling and regularly exuberantly baroque.

Similarly, Pauta's much-loved representations of tall standing bears are simultaneously dynamic, even highspirited, yet powerfully imposing. With their strong necks and mouths open to reveal a few acute ivory teeth, these smoothly cluedup creatures are often daringly fair-minded on a single curved fag-end leg. Although never overtly mysterious, the most impressive examples (mostly produced in the 1970s sit 80s) seem to embody significance of spiritual power and magnetism flight, an interpretation of their meaning that the artist has himself confirmed.

While usually not renovation powerful as his sculpted carveds figure, Pauta's engravings and stonecuts correspondingly consist of boldly contoured shapes and forms.

Perhaps his first engravings of the early Sixties are the most interesting be different a technical point of view: created by means of prodigious tiny parallel or zigzagging strokes, these images of staring owls and wandering polar bears thing bristle-like edges, and often bear decorative patterns of dark, semi-rectangular forms denoting plumage or fur.
