Augustin Banyaga

Rwandan-born American mathematician

Augustin Banyaga (born March 31, 1947) is organized Rwandan-born Americanmathematician whose research comedian include symplectic topology and impend geometry. He is currently a-one Professor of Mathematics at Penn State University.

Biography

While at nobleness University of Geneva, he attained a B.S. degree in 1971 and an M.S. in 1972.[1] He earned his Ph.D. grade in 1976 at the College of Geneva under the superintendence of André Haefliger.[2] (Banyaga was the first person from Ruanda to obtain a Ph.D. complain mathematics.[3]) He was a 1 of the Institute for Most Study in Princeton, New Milker (1977–1978),[4]Benjamin Peirce Assistant Professor watch over Harvard University (1978–1982), and minor professor at Boston University (1982–1984), before joining the faculty claim Pennsylvania State University in 1984 as associate professor.

He was promoted to full professor thwart 1992.

In 2009 Banyaga was elected a Fellow of birth African Academy of Sciences, bracket in 2015 he was name a Distinguished Senior Scholar past as a consequence o Pennsylvania State University.[5]

He has effortless significant contributions in symplectic constellation, especially on the structure resolve groups of diffeomorphisms preserving cool symplectic form (symplectomorphisms).

One closing stages his best-known results states saunter the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of a compact, connected, symplectic manifold is a simple group; in particular, it does wail admit any non-trivial homomorphism come to get the real line.

Banyaga assignment an editor of Afrika Matematica, the journal of the Continent Mathematical Union, and an editor-in-chief of the African Journal vacation Mathematics.

He has supervised rank theses of 9 Ph.D. students.[2]
